Nitty Gritty of Lollipop Drops!

Lollipop Drops started from a session of play with the Creative Grids Hexagon Trim Tool,  you can find it here if you are not quite sure what it is.  I was having lots of fun and working one day a week in a patchwork shop, Moda Pedal Pushes range was new and looked so inviting that it came home with me.  

I wanted to make a modern looking quilt and do a bit more than the trim tool showed in the instructions. So with a bit of manipulation of the tool I decided to create this top.

I wanted to create the red like it was coming from the centre of the quilt, and it was reminding me of those large lollipops we would have as kids,  hence the name especially when I placed the small and partial hexagons in the lower and side border.

Once the top was completed I decided to quilt this with Aurifil 12 wt thread and a Shashiko needle were my choice along with the Hobbs Tuscany Wool Wadding for loft.

Each element was to be quilted with a different quilting pattern to give movement to the quilt.

I entered this quilt in the Victorian Quilters Showcase this year in our Innovative Quilts Section.  I am happy to say this quilt was awarded a first.  This was my first every prize in a show like this.

Hexagon Royale! Come learn with me

Hexagon Royale, a sampler using Creative Grids Trim Tool

I am so excited to be teaching this technique to make a quilt from the Hexagon Trim Tool by Creative Grids.  Not only will I show you how to use this fun tool for basic blocks, but I will enthuse you with all the little nuances that I have developed to bring you fantastic new hexagon blocks to make this wonderful eye catching quilt.  You could choose to make lots of the same block to create a cool one block quilt or do what I have done and make the sampler.  I would love you to join me in the summer program at the Sewing Connection so please give the girls a call and Book your place today for my two day workshop.

Bastille Day Celebrations has returned to me after travelling around with the One Red Thread competition! With Berry Patchwork in NSW.  It is lovely to see this piece again

This quilt has also returned home from travelling Australia and New Zealand with the 100 quilts for 100 years anniversary of WW1.   I will now present this quilt to the Kooweerup Secondary College Concert Band. I dedicated this quilt to the school band and the 39th Batallion.  The school band march every year with the 39th Battaliaon in Melbourne Anzac Day Parade through the streets to the Shrine on Anzac Day.  Both of my daughters attended the school and we're both members of the school band and we're honoured to be school band captains.  I have seen  the wonderful dedication of both the diggers and the students as these two groups work together.  So this week I hope to be able to present this quilt to the Music Director.

Trunk show

Storm at Sea

Storm at sea was made for my youngest daughter for her move from Secondary School to University Study.  I did not finish it until her second year of University.  It measures 93" x 96".  I paper pieced this using the Freezer paper method and I hand quilted this with Aurifil 28wt.  She loves it!

Allison's quilt

This quilt was made for my eldest daughter on her move from Secondary School to University.  she loved pink and green and butterflies.  So this is the quilt I came up with for her.  It is not as big as the other daughters quilt.  And I am in the process of making her a new quilt, it is green and orange with greys.  I am looking forward to finishing it for her next year.

Lana's Quilt

This was a quilt I made for my niece for her 21st Birthday. This was a very interesting pinwheel design.  I was really please with this. It was a lap size quilt.

Another 21st Quilt

This is a bargello quilt I made for a daughters 21st, I actually made two of these in about 6 weeks as I had two 21st gifts.  I hand quilted these also, just simply to emphasise the flow of the quilt.  Both girls loved their quilts.

Josh's Swans Quilt

This is another 21st quilt.  This was made this year for my daughters boyfriend who is a Sydney Swans Fan.  I designed the new york beauty block to emulate the Sydney Opera House which is in their emblem.  I made this into a quillow and I hand quilted this with 12 wt thread from Aurifil.  This quilt was quilted in under two weeks and a week to put together.  It was a few days late for gifting.

Moulin Rouge

This little art quilt is part of a competition called One Red Thread.  This is my interpretation of Bastille Day in Paris with the girls from Moulin Rouge out dancing in the streets.

2015 Pantone colour of the year quilt

This is my Pantone entry for 2015.  I hand quilted this quilt and I call it Time Warp.  I have used reproduction fabrics but pieced it modern and heavily quilted it with 28wt Aurifil thread to emulate a 3D pattern in the hexagon with background like pebbles

These last two where also using the hexagon trim tool by creative grids like Time Warp.  I love this tool and am always thinking of more ways I can experiment with it.  Both of these quilts were machine quilted by myself

Charm Dance

This quilt was made for someone special to help cheer her up and give her comfort as she has some health issues.  I made this within a week.  2 days to piece it and 5 days to quilt it.  I hand quilted this with 12 wt Aurifil.  I used a large daisy and just quilted a swirly vine between the flowers

This quilt was made and machine quilted by me also.  This was made for a new born and it has room for her as she grows and needs to play on the floor.  Her mum adores it as uses it all the time.

Time Warp

Let me introduce my Time Warp Quilt.  This quilt was made for the Pantone 2015 Quilt Challenge and I made this quilt using the Creative Grids Hexagon Trim Tool and Pam Buda Prairie Gatherings and for the border I found Judes Album Quilt fabric by Jude Rothermel.  My hand quilting thread of choice for this was Aurifil 28 weight thread Numbers 1103 red and 2315 cream as you will see in the close ups.

Time Warp measuring 52" x 44"  has Hobbs Tuscany Wool wadding to highlight the quilting design.  I decided to quilt hexagons in the border and pebbles and swirls in the negative space with the main hexagons of the quilt being quilted with perspective to create a three dimensional effect.

Summer Hexagon Fun!

I seem like I am still catching up with my projects with the finishing of two very close, but with the ending of one comes the starting of new projects.  The revolving door of ideas is never ending thankfully.

Sampler at Gippsbeary Cottage

This is my hexagon sampler using the Trim Tool by Creative Grids, it has been a blast and I look forward to having lots of fun in my class with this.

This quilt is now finally out of the hoop with all of the quilting done.  Binding is now being completed and will be given to my girl next week.  She is so excited to get this quilt as she has been waiting for a year.

                                              

       

Anyway I have many new things to share with you.  I also have my blocks for the last few week that I have done but unable to to blog about, so we will have a post about them very soon.

Happy New Year!

I hope everyone has had a wonderful start to the new year!  I have got lots installed and planned for this year.  Many quilting projects and some to share with you and I hope you will share with me also.

Firstly I plan on making a quilt block a week and that will give me 52 blocks to make a quilt or a few next year.  I plan on using scraps from leftover quilts or an extra block of a swap.  So here is my first block it is called Square over squares

For this block I cut 

1 x 4.5" square, 1x 2.5" square and 1x (2.5 "x 4.5") rectangle of black

1 x 2.5" square and 1 x (2.5" x 4.5") rectangle of red

2 x 2.5" squares and (2 x 2.5 x 4.5") rectangle of black and white

I assemble this in rows by sewing a black rectangle to a black and white rectangle

a black and white square to a red rectangle to a black square

and lastly a white and black square to a red square this piece is then sewn to make a square by sewing the last black and white rectangle to it.  

I then sewed the two top rows and the the squares and then the two halves to form this cool block.

I have joined a group of Australians on Facebook and we are called Pass the Parcel Red, We make a block and then put it in an envelope and send to the next person, they make the same block and then pass on to the next person until the parcel comes back to you with enough blocks to make a quilt.

this is how i plan this quilt to look but it will be scrappy version of this.

My next venture is to continue tutoring this sampler at Palm Beach Quilting and also start tutoring at Gippsbeary Cottage in Korumburra.  I have some new fabric on the way to make a new sampler with a little more variety so I will show you very soon.  This sampler is made with the Hexagon Trim Tool from Creative Grids.  It is such a fun tool and is simple for everyone to use and play with.
