Rainbow the blues away!

Yesterday I wrote about my scrap heap challenge, so today I will give you an update on how I am doing with this task. Where do I start, I have accumulated scraps in the past 6-9 months and haven't really dealt with them like I normally do.  There are normally sorted after I finish a project into relevant boxes, either small scraps, small pieces fat quarter and then into larger yardage.  I always have 2.5" scraps and charms but these have been depleted.

Well I have been cutting a lot of my old small fabrics into 2.5" squares and into charms,  I have another box which is taking the smaller pieces which I will use, I have another box for fat quarters and smaller and they are being placed into likely matches for future projects.  Whilst I have been cutting the 2.5" squares I have been able to make a couple for my new challenge to help motivate a friend.  Today's colour is blue.  I am having so much fun with this.

Today's 9 patch to rid the blues

An extra red to add to the patches for yesterday

Here are all of my blocks from today and yesterday

Below are some photos of the fabrics in the sorting and cutting process and then there is my latest fabric which has arrived.  It is Kona Solids and I have purchased this from Handmade by Emily

In regards to the Rainbow 9 patches to rid the blues, I will be posting the colours for each day on my Facebook page Wehago Designs click here to check it out.

So until next blog post take time to smell the roses, and enjoy life.  I will be quilting and creating and sorting my stash.

Keep smiling

Wendy

Rainbow 9 patches to rid the blues!

Next scrap heap challenge!

If you have been following my blog for awhile then I am sure you are familiar with the different projects I take on.  This is my most recent challenge, to rid the scraps and have a stash.
Nine patch from my scrap heap

The last few weeks have seen my time taken away a little as things have changed in the household, I now have my mum living with me as she has been unwell.  So the need to get organised has become a true reality.  So yesterday as I was trying to sort my scraps and cut them into charms and 2.5" squares for future use, I took a little time out to speak to a friend across the other side of the world to she how she was doing.  She told me she had two tubs of scraps that needed sorting.  It was overwhelming for her to even think about it.  I suggested rTher than sorting it, why not do a block a day.  I even suggested that I could do it with her.  So we decided on a 9 patch block and she picked the first colour  and it is red.  So this morning hen I rose and after breakfast I made my 9 patch block and posted it via a msg to her,  We have another friend joining us also.  So each day we will pick a colour and make s 9 patch from that colour. Then we will share it between ourselves.

This morning after I had made the block I shared it in a group on Facebook and a few of the members there have decided to give this ago to get them out of a slump.  My friend actually made 5 today.  I am wondering if any of you would like to join?  I will post tn colour for the day on my Wehago Designs Facebook page and on my ?Wehago Designs on IG.  I will #Rainbow 9 Patches rid the blues!
Today was red and tomorrow will be blue.

Charity Quilt
The above quilt is made by a group I attend on Tuesday's. Once a month we make charity quilts by QAG method.  The. We take the blocks home and assemble the quilt.  All the fabrics have been donated.  We then donate them to our local district nurse for distribution of they are given to the local nursing home.

My tub of 2.5" squares ready for piecing
Would love to know if you would like to join with me to make these blocks.  Anyway until next time have lots of fun quilting.

All the very best with your needle and thread,

Wendy

My scrap heap challenge!

My Scrap Heap Challenge - The Trifle Dish Quilt

Trifle Dish Quilt top complete without borders

My scrap heap challenge was on!  A friend decided to start a Facebook group to do a quilt along of the Moda Bakeshop Trifle dish Quilt, but instead of doing it weekly we would do monthly.  Some people were getting fabric kits once a month but i decided this would be a fabulous quilt to use up all of the itty bitty scraps that just seem to multiply.  I have only made a small dint into them.  I plan on doing more quilts like this as it was such fun.

organising of the heart blocks
sewing of the heart blocks

two of my strawberry hearts
The strawberry hearts I designed as I felt it needed smaller pieces compared to what was in the pattern, also I was using scraps so large pieces were not an option for me.  I was also rescaling every block to a slightly smaller scale to accommodate the scraps and to make a slightly smaller quilt

complete without borders
Now for the fun part of adding the borders, I decided on a sawtooth border as I felt this framed the quilt nicely as you can see in the photo below.  I have cut out a binding from the scraps and it will be bound with a scrappy look, I also have the backing and I will be hand quilting it with Aurifil 12 wt thread.  I am looking forward to quilting this in the coming weeks.

Gelati Bowl of Lygon Street
I am renaming this quilt as I have done some considerable changes to the original pattern and used different techniques to assemble and make it.  I would encourage you to sign up and follow my blog for there are lots of exciting quilty adventures and projects I am about to undertake and I would hate to see you miss any of the opportunities and offers which will be coming your way.

Also just incase you haven't done so don't forget to check out Amy's Creative Side for the the spring bloggers festival,  I have two quilts in, one in large is my Love calms the seas and the one in hand quilting section is Time Warp.  I would appreciate your vote if you have time and the eye candy is worth the look around.

Until  next post have fun Quilting and Creating,

Wendy

Love Calms the Seas - A blog for Spring!

Please vote for Love Calms the Seas for Viewers Choice Thanks

Please vote for Love Calms the Seas for best Large Quilt Thanks

Thanks must go out to Amy's Creative Side for hosting the Spring Bloggers Quilt Festival.  What a wonderful opportunity of joining blogs together and gathering a lot of magical eye candy.  I like to thank all of the sponsors and also all of the bloggers who are linking to make this a wonderful interactive festival such fun.
Completed Love Calms the Seas
Love Calms the Seas Quilt was made for my youngest daughter as she completed her final year at Secondary College. I planned to finish this so she could have it with her on her new journey in life at University, to have a little bit of home and me with her.

starting of the piecing and placement of colours
I decided to piece this on the machine using the freezer paper foundation method.  This really helped as it was a very large quilt.  In fact this is the largest quilt I have ever made measuring 93" x 96".  Initially it was to only have one heart in the centre, but my daughter loved it so much we decided to put four more hearts in the quilt.  I am so glad we did for I feel it is very balanced now.

Quilting the waves
I love to hand quilt so with Aurifil 28 wt thread, in a blue, green and a purple and a turquoise. and my John James needles quilting began.  I was using the storm at sea quilt block but as the quilting  flowed I decided this quilt really needed to be called 'love calms the seas'.  I quilted waves into the quilt with blue going one way and the green areas going the opposite direction.
another shot of the waves being quilted
after the waves are quilted ready to quilt the hearts
When it came to the quilting of the hearts it called for something different.  I felt like the waves needed to be calm within them, as my desire for her life ahead to be full of more calmness than stress.  I was quilting my love into this quilt, so she can forever have a hug from her mama bear.

another heart in the midst of quilting
Label just had to be a purple heart
At last the label screamed to me to be a heart.  This quilt took me 18 months to make and another few months of planning and gathering fabrics.  Whilst my daughter had completed her first year of University before I finished it, she now has her quilt and loves it very much.  I am so glad I took the time to quilt it the way I did.
here she is hiding in my back garden
Thanks for reading my post and for voting for my quilt, I also have another quilt entered in the hand quilting section - Hand quilting 'Time Warp' and I would appreciate your vote over here also.

Please enjoy the eye candy and be inspired,

Keep on quilting and quilting,

Wendy :)

Time Warp
Let me introduce my Time Warp Quilt.  This quilt was made for the Pantone 2015 Quilt Challenge and I made this quilt using the Creative Grids Hexagon Trim Tool and Pam Buda Prairie Gatherings and for the border I found Judes Album Quilt fabric by Jude Rothermel.  My hand quilting thread of choice for this was Aurifil 28 weight thread Numbers 1103 red and 2315 cream as you will see in the close ups.

love the sunlight dappling in the shade

Time Warp measuring 52" x 44"  has Hobbs Tuscany Wool wadding to highlight the quilting design.  I decided to quilt hexagons in the border and pebbles and swirls in the negative space with the main hexagons of the quilt being quilted with perspective to create a three dimensional effect.
